Succulent Care

How often should you water a succulent?

In the summer soil should be allowed to completely dry out between watering.  In winter when the succulents are dormant, watering succulents just once a month. Overwatering and ensuing plant rot is the single most common cause of plant failure.

How do you tell if you are overwatering your succulents?

If your succulent starts to look unhealthy, with shrivelled leaves and no new growth. Reduce watering and see if your plant starts to recover.

Do Succulents need direct sunlight?

Locate your succulents in a bright position, but not intense direct sunlight.  While they appreciate a lot of light, most succulents need sun protection, especially if the temperature hits 90 degrees or above, or if they are small plants.

Care Tips

  • Repot your succulents once a year, using fresh succulent/cacti soil, that will provide good drainage.
  • When you repot them, make sure to place them into a larger pot to allow room for growth.
  • Watch for any dry and dying leaves, if you find any, make sure too remove them from the succulent.
  • The growing season for succulents is from spring to autumn.  Your succulents will need fertilizing during this time.
  • In winter your succulents will require less care and water, as they tend not to grow as much during this time.
